KNOWING
ISN’T DOING.

An implementation check for leaders who want to know whether shared principles are reaching everyday practice.

There is no single response that fits every child. Adoption and care experience may be relevant to a child’s needs, but should not become an assumption about their behaviour or identity.

Awareness is not implementation

A staff team can agree with the principles of relational practice and still respond differently to the same situation. Leaders need to know where that gap appears, not just whether training has happened.

Look for evidence of practiceAsk staff to describe what they do during a difficult transition. Compare accounts across roles. Check whether families know who will follow up and when.

Five useful areas to review

  • Shared responses: do adults know the agreed approach?
  • Transitions: are changes anticipated and communicated?
  • Identity: do classroom routines avoid assumptions about family?
  • Family communication: are concerns recorded as observations and actions?
  • Review: is anyone checking whether changes are helping?

Make a 30-day plan

Choose one change that staff can describe, try and review. A plan with an owner and date is more useful than an unmeasured intention.

What happens next?

Share the relevant observations or plan with the people who can act on it. Agree a small change, a named person and a review date. If you need help navigating the school conversation, Braythorpe offers support for families and schools.
